The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (Section 2(9)) recognises six consumer rights that every buyer of goods or services is entitled to.
The Six Rights
- Right to Safety — protection against goods/services hazardous to life and property
- Right to Information — to be informed about quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard, and price
- Right to Choose — access to a variety of goods/services at competitive prices
- Right to be Heard — consumer interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums
- Right to Seek Redressal — against unfair trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation
- Right to Consumer Education — to acquire knowledge and skills to be an informed consumer
Who Is a “Consumer”?
Anyone who buys goods or hires services for personal use — not for resale or commercial purpose.
✅ Online purchases are explicitly covered under the 2019 Act.
✅ E-commerce platforms are now liable as “sellers” if they don’t disclose seller information.
You are a consumer even if you received the goods as a gift — the person who paid for it is the consumer.
